Redesigning a non-profit’s website

Overview

Role

  • Led the sole redesign of website as UX/UI designer

  • Assisted web developer with implementation of new website

Timeline

  • Q1 - Q3 2023 (9 months)

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Stand in Truth is a Berkley-based organization that provides services and opportunities, such as lifeskills training, job certification programs, and financial education, in underserved communities to support them to achieve life changing sustainable social and economic outcomes.

My job was to redesign a website that effectively communicates the mission of the organization, promotes ways to get involved, and enables access to its online resources, using visuals and language accessible for its diverse target audiences.

DESIGN PROCESS

SOLUTION

Before, the website lacked a clear architecture and hierarchy and was visually disjointed. Now, visitors will see a simpler, cleaner website with easier navigation, new branding, and accessible information.

Research

I worked with the CEO of Stand in Truth to understand the requirements and constraints of the new site along with the overall strategy and direction of the organization. This gave me a better understanding of what direction to take the redesign - what pages to highlight and how to make it visually appealing and accessible.

I also wanted to understand the pain points with the current website. Because the CEO did not have any feedback from users on this, I navigated the current website myself to determine the pain points. The key findings were:

Sitemap

Using the insights from research, I focused on creating and solidifying a sitemap, given the current website was really lacking a clear architecture. I worked with the CEO to understand what pages were essential vs non-essential and what pages were duplicative of each other. I then used this to create a simpler architecture that would make navigation of the website easier for the user.

WIREFRAMING

Using the sitemap, I created low-fidelity wireframes to start mapping out content for the different pages. I worked with the CEO to iterate on the wireframes to ensure the designs were heading in the right direction.

HIGH-FIDELITY DESIGNS

After creating wireframes, I then applied  a color scheme and typography to create high-fidelity designs. Again, I worked very closely with the CEO to iterate and fine-tune the designs.

Development

After the CEO signed off on final designs, I went into the development process to implement the designs in Wordpress and populate any dynamic content throughout the site.
